Woodcarvers
Woodcarvers are all kinds of folks sharing a love of wood and nature and their creativity and humor. The Houston Area Woodcarvers Club (HAWC) is an organization for people who think woodcarving is a creative and rewarding activity. They are people who feel that sharing the benefits and joys of carving is almost as much fun as carving itself. HAWC provides up-to-date carving information and a friendly, helpful support system for carvers at all levels of experience. It provides members an opportunity to increase their confidence and expand individual skills at classes, demonstrations, and lectures by experts. The Houston Area Woodcarvers were organized in 1970. They are a chapter of the National Woodcarvers Association. Currently there are approximately 80 members. Many of the members are also members of the Texas Woodcarvers Guild. Mini-classes at the monthly meetings are taught by both club members and carvers from other areas of Texas and the U.S.
The Houston Area Woodcarvers offer an opportunity to learn new and refine woodcarving skills, to teach others your special techniques and to share experiences and successes. It's an opportunity to share information on sources for obtaining wood, tools, books, and more.
HAWC members carve in several formats: "in-the-round", relief, realistic, stylized, caricature, and chip. Mini-classes and workshops are offered at each club meeting. Projects range from the beginner to expert level and many can be completed in one day. There is always someone available to offer help and hints to make a project easier.
